WORKING BUILDING FIRE AT THE OLD EDGEWOOD CARS FOR LESS

At 0214 hours Joppa Magnolia and surrounding volunteers were alerted for a reported building fire in the area of Route 152 and Route 40. Engine 814 w/6 was first to arrive at 676 Pulaski Hwy with a one story vacant garage fire showing sides bravo and delta. Engine 814 established a water source via 5" supply line to the west bound lanes of Pulaski Hwy while remaining crew members placed one 300' 2 1/2" blitz line and one 200' 1 3/4" in service. Pulaski Hwy Command, Captain Fannon called for the working fire and requested one additional truck company to the scene. All units operated from the exterior due to the decreasing building conditions for about three hours before returning to service.

 
   
   
 
SECOND FIRE IN 24 HOURS

At 0148 hours companies turned out for a reported dwelling fire if the 409 box on Meredith Court. First to arrive on scene was Truck 431 with Chief 4 in charge advising of heavy smoke from the second floor upgrading to a bedroom fire. Crews from Company 4 stretched into the second floor knocking the fire while Engines 315 and 814 backed them up and checked for fire extension. All occupants were reported out and searches were negative. Mutual aide companies put up in roughly an hour leaving the home company with the Fire Marshall to investigate the cause.

Harford County Dispatch toned out Joppa Magnolia Volunteers for a 10-50 w/ reports of people trapped in the intersection of Pulaski Highway and Joppa Farm Road at 1332 hours. IV 893 was first to arrive on scene confirming rescue shortly followed by Engine 811 and Truck 831. Crews began to work on the vehicles at hand calling for the Squad out of Baltimore County Station 48 located just minutes across the county line. Command made request for an additional IV unit and aviation. Crews extricated all patients in about twenty minuntes for transport to area trauma centers.

 
 
BUILDING FIRE AT THE SELF STORAGE

At 1255 hours Joppa Magnolia and surrounding volunteers were alerted for smoke coming from several outside storage units with in the compound of the Devon Self Storage in the 1300 block of Pulaski Highway. Engine 814 was first to arrive grabing a plug laying out to the possible fire and by this time the fire had partially vented through the metal roll up doors. With no truck crew on scene at the time the crew of 814 split up stretching lines and opening up several roll up doors finding heavy fire conditions inside of two 10 x 15 units and minor extension into several other adjacent units. Companies from 12, 4 and 48 assisted with the salvage of undamaged property and overhaul of the burned out units while Truck 831 opened up the metal roof in several places. The MSFM office was called to the scene to investigate the suspicous fire. Units put up and returned to service in about two and a half hours.

 
   
   
 
EDGEWOOD MAN FATALLY SHOT IN JOPPA MAGNOLIA VFC

The Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company Hall located next to the main station was the center of a deadly attack on a local Edgewood man. An unnamed 22 year old male suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the upper torso early Monday morning just after midnight. The incident occurred as an alleged birthday party was ending on the upper level of the hall. Reports state the victim was exiting through the stair way when an unidentified man approached the victim firing the fatal gunshot. Members of the JMVFC were located upstairs working the event and unaware of the confrontation prior to hearing the sounds of gun fire below. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office and JMVFC Emergency Medical Services immediately rushed to the scene in attempts to save the man’s life and secure the area. Investigators are looking for tips that may lead to an arrest, a $1,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to an arrest.

 
 
MUTUAL AIDE INTO ABINGDON FOR A TOWNEHOUSE FIRE

Just as companies had put up from the rescue on Mountain Road and returned to service, Harford County Dispatch struck the 412 box  at 1546 hours for a basement fire in the 100 block of Sprucewood Court in Laurel Woods bringing units from Companies 4, 3, 8, 12, and 13. Engine 315 was first to arrive reporting of smoke showing from a two story MOG which quickly was upgraded to a wroking basement fire with extension to the first floor. All hands were called to put a knock on the fire preventing further extension, search and rescue, and much needed ventilation. Engine 815 assisted with fire attack stretching the second attack line while Engine 814 opened up from the rear completeing VES task. All companies worked well together placing this stubborn fire under control.

 
 
ANOTHER CUT JOB ON MOUNTAIN ROAD

Friday afternoon at 1451 hours Company 8 was alerted for a two car mvc w/ possible entrapment. Truck 831 arrived to confirm one female trapped and began stabilazation, extrication, and patient care. Squad 483 from Baltimore County was special called to scene to assist as well as Engines 814, 815, and medic 893. Several transports made to area hospitals with one transport to 634 trauma center via Trooper 1.

 
   
 
OVERTURNED ON THE INTERSTATE

On Monday at 1621 hours the rescue box was alerted for an overturned vehicle with people trapped on I-95 at the exit to Bel Air calling for an engine and medic out of Company 8. Engine 815 was the first piece to arrive shortly followed by Truck 831 which was special called by Chief 8-1. Joppa Magnolia units began extrication on the overturned vehicle as EMS treated the one trapped inside. Units from Abingdon assisted with patient care, stabilization, and extrication along with MSP Trooper 1 who made the transport to Johns Hopkins Trauma Center. Units remained on scene for about 45 minutes.

 
   
 
DWELLING FIRE IN RIVERSIDE

At 1357 hours the Harford County Dispatch Center toned out companies 4, 2, and 8 for a report of a mobile home fire in the 402 box at 4309 Pulaski Hwy. Engine 814 was the first to mark up and arrive with heavy smoke showing on all sides calling for the working fire. Engine 814 had established there own supply line and stretched two inch and three quarter attack lines in the front door knocking the bulk of the fire prior to any other companies arrival. Units from Abingdon and Aberdeen assisted with ventilation and overhaul. Units racked up and returned to service in about two hours.

Joppa Magnolia Vollies shine again as two members were recognized by the MSFA at the 2008 MSFA Convention held in Ocean City. Mr. Lou Jonske, life member of the company and past Chief and President was honored with the Gladhill-Thompson Trophy, the highest award given to an individual by the MSFA. Chief Derrick Lloyd was also recognized as the 2007-2008 MSFA Firefighter of the year. Chief Llyod is also a life long member and has held many offices with in the company. The brothers and sisters of the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company would like to congradulate Lou and Derrick on a job well done and thank them for there hard work. MIDDAY DWELLING FIRE IN EDGEWOOD

On Monday June 16th at 14:34 hours units were alerted for a dwelling fire in Beacon Terrace. Engine's 1211 and 814 and Truck 831 arrived with nothing showing and quickly upgraded to heavy smoke on the interior. The crew from 1211 stretched a line as the crew from 814 searched for the seat of the fire which was on the second floor rear bedroom. The room and contents fire was held to 2 and 1 with a response from the State FM for suspicious circumstances. Unit's out for 1 1/2 hours.

 
 
MVC WITH RESCUE ON MOUNTAIN ROAD

Around 1800 hours JOPPA VOLUNTEERS were alerted to the 2500 block of Mountain Road for reports of an MVC w/ rescue. Truck 831, Engine 814, and Medic 893 arrived at the same time and Chief 8-1, Petersen (OIC T831) confirmed one trapped and established "MOUNTAIN ROAD COMMAND". One patient was extricated and transported to Bayview Trauma Ceneter. Units wrapped up and returned to service in about 30 minutes.

 
   
 
WORKING FIRE BOX 801

On the early morning of 5/20/2008 at 02:37 hours, Harford county dispatch alerted Joppa Magnolia and neighboring departments from Station 12 Edgewood and Balto. County Station 48, for the dwelling fire, box 801 at 411 Philadelphia Rd. After the tones dropped Chief 8-1 went on the air and dispatch advised that Harford County Sheriff’s office at location with fire through the roof. Truck 831 out of house 3 went en route with E-1211 following right behind. As the truck was making the left onto Philadelphia Rd from Md. RT 152 a sizeable column was noticed and the truck advised dispatch to fill the box. Bringing an engine, tanker and assistant chief from company 13 Fallston, Squad out of Balto. Co. Station 48 and an engine from Station 20 Balto. Co. White Marsh. Company 4 Abingdon was alerted for an engine as the RIT team for the duration of the incident. T-831 along with E-1211 arrived with a single family 1 story brick front with heavy fire through the roof. E-1211 dropped a 5 inch supply line down an 800 ft lane and the work began. Crews from the truck went to work quickly ventilating windows while the officer gained entry and began a primary search which was proved to be negative. Crews from 1211 stretched the first hand line and began knocking the fire. A second and third line were pulled by Joppa volunteers and assisted with extinguishment and pulling ceilings and walls. E-481 hit the hydrant assisted by E-815, Tanker 1321 and E-814 came down the lane to dump a tank of water into E-1211 supplying a continuous water source for the fire. Crews from Station 48, Station 20, and Company 13 armed with hooks assisted with pulling ceilings and cooling hot spots. Engine 315 from Company 3 Bel Air filled in Joppa house 3 and later called to the scene to help with overhaul, which brought engine 512 from Havre De Grace to handle the fill in. E-512 handled a wires call during their stay in Joppa. Other units on scene included Rehab 888, Paramedic 893, BGE, Harford County building inspector, DPW and FM 42 to handle the investigation. WORKING RV FIRE WITH EXPOSER TO GARRAGE

At 23:06 hours Joppa-Magnolia Fire Department was alerted to assist Abingdon fire company with an engine on the 406 fire box along with Station 12 Edgewood for an engine. Chief 4 and E-411 arrived shortly after the tones dropped with a fully involved RV camper in the 3800 block of Washington Ave. E-1211 arrived and crews began streching handlines and putting a knock on the fire. E-814 arrived with a crew of 6 equiped with tools and began opening up and assisted with extinguishment/overhaul. Crews from E-411 and E-1211 protected exposers while cooling 2 propane tanks as well. Crews began cleaning up around 23:30 and cleared the scene at 23:50. FM 42 was on location for the investigation and Truck 431 was placed in service while enroute.

 
 
PASSING OF LIFE AND AUXILIARY MEMBER

It is with deep regret that the JOPPA MAGNOLIA VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY announce the passing of Viola E. Thompson, Life and Auxiliary Member for over 50 years. Viola E. Thompson otherwise known to the members as Ms. Vi joined the JMVFC in 1953 with her husband Bill just one year after the companies organization. Within the first year Ms. Vi and other wives of the JMVFC fireman began to put together and form the first Auxiliary for the company. In 1964 Ms. Vi was elected President of the Harford County Ladies Auxiliary where she served the years 1964 thru 1966 and again 1973 thru 1974 and yet again served as the JMVFC Ladies Auxiliary Secretary in 1989 in which she served as such for twelve consecutive years. The achievements of Viola E. Thompson could continue to go on for pages but most importantly the brothers and sisters of the JMVFC and surrounding companies could appreciate the hard work and dedication to staff the Ladies Auxiliary unit # 888 on hundreds of fires. Funeral services will be held at McCommas Funeral Home, Abingdon MD on April 22nd @ 1000 hours. The membership of the JOPPA MAGNOLIA VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY # 8 send their thoughts and prayers to family and friends. Viola E. Thompson, you will be greatly missed by all.
