April 18th Bull Roast At Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company
To Help Raise Funds For Medical Care

Joppa, MD – April 6,2009 – In an ironic twist, having just finished 752 straight days of chemotherapy – more than two years of daily treatments – for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Harford County paramedic and Joppa resident Michelle Lloyd now is helping her husband, Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company Chief Derrick Lloyd, through his battle with brain cancer.

A Bull Roast is planned for Saturday, April 18th at the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company House 1 (1403 Old Mountain Road in Joppa) to raise funds to help defray medical expenses of this couple, who for a combined 32 years have been volunteering to protect citizens from fire and medical emergencies. The Bull Roast will feature food, drinks, fun and dancing. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased by contacting: Kim Powers (410-652-6694), Mary McCann (443-987-2913), Jason Freund (410-808-8823) or Kimmie Thomas (410-459-3908).

Currently serving his second term as JMVFC chief, Derrick Lloyd on February 23rd had a right crainiotomy removing a 6 centimeter lesion, and two days later was released from the hospital with 48 staples in his head.   Today he is walking around, pain free, and is scheduled to begin radiation treatments this month – with the same radiation oncologist wife Michelle had. Derrick Lloyd received the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Fireman of the Year award in 2007, has been an instructor with the University of Maryland Fire Rescue Institute (MFRI) since 1988 and is a member of the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association Technical Rescue Team. A life member of JMVFC, he has been in the fire service for 23 years.

Derrick and Michelle met in 2000 when he was the instructor for her Firefighter 1 class. They re-met in the summer of 2002 and married in November 2004.

Michelle, forced to retire as a Baltimore City Fire Department paramedic in May 2008 due to her cancer, serves as the IVT Program Director for Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association and has been a member of JMVFC since 2003. She began her fire service with the Cowenton (now White Marsh) Volunteer Fire Company and joined the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Company in 2001, where she is still a member and teaches classes.   Michelle also teaches with the Community College of Baltimore County EMT Program and is a MFRI instructor like her husband.

CHIEF 8 DERRICK LLOYD FALLS ILL

Friday, February 27, 2009
-
On Monday February 23, 2009 Chief 8 Derrick Lloyd had a right crainiotomy removing a 6 centimeter lesion.  On Wednesday the 25th Chief Lloyd was released from the hospital and returned home with 48 staples in his head. As of today he is up, walking around, pain free and being himself!  The Chief and his wife Michelle appreciate all the calls, however they are both exhausted.  He has had a few visitors but Michelle asks two things: if you would like to visit please call first as if he is sleeping she will not wake him.  Secondly if you are ill or "think" you are getting sick please do not visit as he can't afford an infection!  Please keep the Chief and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they await test results and begin the next phase of their recovery!
